In order for any element of design to be seen there must be value contrast. When people make an element darker they are shading and when people are making it lighter they are tinting. A successful photo uses the full range of values. Artists check this by using a value scale. A value scale is a tool that shows the gradual change from the lightest value or white to its darkest value of black.
